ROUND 1 RESULTS - December 2009

I have now figured out how to print, how to update the website, and how to generate and judge the puzzles under Windows 7. I have found some freeware programs for some of these tasks, but had to purchase new software for the rest. As many people have surmised, it looks like Microsoft deliberately made Windows 7 incompatible with earlier versions so users would be forced to buy new software. Unfortunately, it looks like this wretched print quality will be permanent. Windows 7 simply does not support printing in any reasonable manner.

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 20 competing entries in the December 2009 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 3 complete groups of 6 players. These 3 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 to compete for $175. There is also one partial group with 2 players. The winner of that group will receive $15.

Total prize money won this month is $120. The Tournament of Riches has now paid $66,137 in cash prizes.

There is still one copy left of our valuable How To Win booklet. You can get it for only $6, which includes postage and handling. ($6.50 in Canada, $8 overseas.) The booklet is full of tips and techniques for winning Tournament of Riches, One On One and similar contests.

All winners will receive forms asking if they wish to continue to the next round. The forms are enclosed with each monthly mailing. Winners who wish to risk their prizes and continue to the following round must sign and return the forms by the given deadline. Winners who wish to stop and take their prizes may discard the signature forms. Winners will receive either their prize check or their higher round puzzle(s) with the next month's Round 1 puzzle. If the number of players for a given higher round is not an even multiple of 6, then some players will be held over to a later month.

Robert Thrift had the top-scoring 239-point Round 1 solution shown below. The cutoff was at 230 points.

Here is the highest-scoring entry in Round 1 and the list of winners:
