ROUND 1 RESULTS - November 2009

The Contest Center has moved to a new computer running Windows 7. We allowed 2 weeks for the transition, based on our experiences with earlier computers. (This one is our sixth.) However, that was not nearly enough. Microsoft decided to make a clean break with the past, so all of our software, and all of the tools we used to use to create, modify and update our programs all stopped functioning at the same time.
All of the puzzles and results that should have been mailed in December are thereby late. We extend our apologies, and we have extended the deadline on all of the January puzzles until February 8.

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 18 competing entries in the November 2009 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 3 complete groups of 6 players. These 3 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 to compete for $175.

Total prize money won this month is $105. The Tournament of Riches has now paid $66,032 in cash prizes.

There is still one copy left of our valuable How To Win booklet. You can get it for only $6, which includes postage and handling. ($6.50 in Canada, $8 overseas.) The booklet is full of tips and techniques for winning Tournament of Riches, One On One and similar contests.

All winners will receive forms asking if they wish to continue to the next round. The forms are enclosed with each monthly mailing. Winners who wish to risk their prizes and continue to the following round must sign and return the forms by the given deadline. Winners who wish to stop and take their prizes may discard the signature forms. Winners will receive either their prize check or their higher round puzzle(s) with the next month's Round 1 puzzle. If the number of players for a given higher round is not an even multiple of 6, then some players will be held over to a later month.

Robert Thrift had the top-scoring 238-point Round 1 solution shown below. The cutoff was at 230 points with 39 on the top row.

Here is the highest-scoring entry in Round 1 and the list of winners:
