ROUND 1 RESULTS - February 2009

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 23 competing entries in the February 2009 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 3 complete groups of 6 players. These 3 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 to compete for $175. There is also one partial group with 5 players. The winner of that group will receive $30.

Total prize money won this month is $135. The Tournament of Riches has now paid $65,051 in cash prizes.

All winners will receive forms asking if they wish to continue to the next round. The forms are enclosed with each monthly mailing. Winners who wish to risk their prizes and continue to the following round must sign and return the forms by the given deadline. Winners who wish to stop and take their prizes may discard the signature forms. Winners will receive either their prize check or their higher round puzzle(s) with the next month's Round 1 puzzle. If the number of players for a given higher round is not an even multiple of 6, then some players will be held over to a later month.

David Wilson had the 216-point top Round 1 solution shown below. The cutoff was at 210 points with 36 on the top row.

Here is the highest-scoring entry in Round 1 and the list of winners:

NEW PLAYERS

Several new players have joined Tournament of Riches in the past few weeks. Welcome, and Good Luck.

This is a good time to remind everyone about the word rules. The rules for the tournament state that you must write two or more different words from the Word List into the puzzle diagram reading from left to right and from top to bottom. "Different words" means that you cannot use the same word more than once. For example, you cannot use the same word horizontally and again vertically. "Left to right and top to bottom" means that both your horizontal words and your vertical words must all be valid words. It is not sufficient to use valid words horizontally, but to form arbitrary letter combinations vertically.

All of your words must be interconnected, as in a crossword puzzle. You cannot form separate groups or "islands" of words where the words in each group are connected to each other, but the groups themselves are separate.

There is only one copy of our valuable How To Win booklet left. You can get it for only $6, which includes postage and handling. ($6.50 in Canada, $8 overseas.) The booklet is full of tips and techniques for winning Tournament of Riches, One On One and similar contests.
