ROUND 1 RESULTS - January 2004

       The Tournament of Riches has now passed a major milestone. In January 2004 total winnings paid in the Tournament of Riches topped $50,000! Winnings now total a whopping $50,515 and climbing.

       Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 85 competing entries for the January 2004 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 14 complete groups of 6 players. These 14 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 and try for $175. There is also one partial group with 1 player. The winner of that group will receive $10.

       Total prize money won this month is $500. Total winnings paid in the Tournament of Riches is now $50,515.

       Joel Prescott had the top-scoring Round 1 solution shown below. Since there were 15 groups, you did not need a top score to win. In fact, you could score 7 points lower and still win. The cutoff was at 214 points with 39 on the top row.

I mailed the January Tournament of Riches to a list of prospective players. This list contained several players who had already won $1000, and were not eligible. I removed most of those names, but I missed some, and several of those remaining entered and won. Since this was my mistake, I will not disqualify those players. They will have this one chance to win an additional prize.
