ROUND 1 RESULTS - August 2003

Congratulations to David Nagel who has reached $1000 in winnings. He is the 20th player to reach this goal. He is no longer eligible to play Round 1, so all other players will move up 1 place more.

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 60 competing entries for the August 2003 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 10 complete groups of 6 players. These 10 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 and try for $175.

Total prize money won in Round 1 is $350 this month. Total winnings paid in the Tournament of Riches is now $48,600.

Gary DeMarco had the top-scoring solution shown below. Since there were 10 groups, you did not need a top score to win. In fact, you could score 5 points lower and still win. The cutoff was at 210 points.
Here are the winners and their scores:

215 Gary DeMarco 212 Thelma Friend
214 David Simmonds 212 Juanita Miller
214 Joel Prescott 211 Wilma Smith
213 Herbert Carl 211 Betty Battaglia
213 Donna Fritschka 210 Eula Gremillion

This is Gary DeMarco's top-scoring 215-point solution:

   S P P P E R S 34

   P L A T L E T 29

   I R E A L E 31

   R T E I R P 34

   T I I L I 31

       L E A P A P 28

   P T A S I L T 28
Some players claimed a higher score, but did not have all their words interconnected.
