ROUND 1 RESULTS - July 2003

Congratulations to David Simmonds who has reached $1000 in winnings. He is the 19th player to reach this goal. He is no longer eligible to play Round 1, so all other players will move up 1 place more.

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 67 competing entries for the July 2003 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 11 complete groups of 6 players. These 11 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 and try for $175. There is also one partial group with 1 player. The winner of that group will receive $10.

The total prize money for Round 1 is $395 this month. Total winnings paid in the Tournament of Riches is now $48,205.

Hugh Gould had the top-scoring solution shown below. Since there were 12 groups, you did not need a top score to win. In fact, you could score 7 points lower and still win. The cutoff was at 223 points with 37 on the top row.

Here are the winners and their scores:
230 Hugh Gould 228 Donna Fritschka
229 David Simmonds 226 Wilma Smith
229 Joel Prescott 226 Ed Fruechtemeyer
229 David Nagel 224 Betty Battaglia
229 Gary DeMarco 223 Edwin Jensen
228 Marie Mattingly 223 Juanita Miller

This is Hugh Gould's top-scoring 230-point solution:

   P E T A L T A 36

   A E S P E 25

   S S A R E A P 35

   S P S P E L L 37

Some players claimed a higher score, but had used invalid words.
