ROUND 1 RESULTS - December 2002

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 75 competing entries for the December 2002 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 12 complete groups of 6 players. These 12 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 and try for $175. There is also one partial group with 3 players. The winner of that group will receive $20.

The total prize money for Round 1 is $440 this month. Total winnings paid in the Tournament of Riches is now $45,455.

David Smallberg had the top-scoring solution shown below. Since there were 13 groups, you did not need a top score to win. In fact, you could score 9 points lower and still win. The cutoff was at 230 points with 41 on the top row.
Here are the winners and their scores:

239 David Smallberg 234 Eula Gremillion
237 David Simmonds 233 Faye Kunels
236 Juanita Miller 232 Donald Sullivan
235 Gary DeMarco 232 Agnes Freidel
235 Herbert Carl 231 Kathleen Conaway
234 Grace Byrne 230 Joan Byram
     234 Ed Fruechtemeyer

This is the top-scoring 239-point solution:

Several people claimed higher scores, but they used the same word more than once.
