ROUND 1 RESULTS - September 2002

Congratulations to Lorraine Nott who has reached $1000 in winnings. She is the 15th player to reach this goal. She is no longer eligible to play Round 1, so all other players will move up another place.

Thank you for playing in the Contest Center's Tournament of Riches. There were 80 competing entries for the September 2002 Round 1 puzzle. This makes 13 complete groups of 6 players. These 13 winners will receive $35 each, or they may choose to continue to Round 2 and try for $175. There is also one partial group with 2 players. The winner of that group will receive $15.

The total prize money for Round 1 is $470 this month. This brings the total paid in the Tournament of Riches to $44,025.

Robert Thrift had the top-scoring solution shown below. Since there were 14 groups, you did not need a top score to win. In fact, you could score 10 points lower and still win. The cutoff was at 220 points with 38 on the top row.

Here are the winners and their scores:
230 Robert Thrift 224 Eula Roshto Gremillion
227 David Smallberg 224 Gary DeMarco
226 Harriet Larson 224 Grace Byrne
226 Paul Riley 224 David Simmonds
225 Juanita Miller 221 Agnes Freidel
225 Flo Walters 221 Ed Fruechtemeyer
224 Ann Caporossi 220 Lorraine Nott

This is Robert Thrift's top-scoring 230-point solution:

   T A P I R I T 36

   I P P L E A 34

       S T P I P 30

       P A I S L E 32

   T A I L T A 30

   A T L A S P 31

   P E I A P S E 37

There are now 5 people waiting to go ahead to Round 2. If your name is in the left column of the winners list, you should certainly consider going ahead to Round 2.

You can win a lot more than the basic $1000 in the Tournament of Riches, but ONLY if you continue to the higher rounds.
